Try changing the goalie first. Shouldn't be hard to find a guy that isn't below replacement value.

I don't read too much into this. If anything he is trying to instill a bidding war for Kane. If all the other GM's see that he could be had they might be more likely to offer something up.

The Jets have three top end prospects coming up soon in Hutchinson, Helleybuck and Comrie. I think we will see these guys competing to push out Pavs. I don't see a trade for a goalie coming. You are right that the current situation needs an upgrade.

None are ready in 2-3 years though. Cam Ward could be a quick fix. Buyout or ship out Pavs.

I think both the Penguins and Jets should be interested in James Reimer's rights to be honest.

Feel like this franschise has been tredding water since day 1. Not bad enough to draft top-guys, not good enough to be a playoff team. Just forever stuck in neutral.

I think the plan for next year is to have Hutchinson back up Pavs and create an internal goalie competition. See how Pavelec raises his play if there is a real possibility the back up could steal the number one position. Hutchinson play in the AHL playoffs all the way to the Calder Cup Final has been outstanding and Pavelec has never really had a threat to his starting position coming from the backup position.

If I'm Winnipeg, I can't sign the papers accepting that fast enough

Helps Edmonton too

If they're gonna play Buff at RW, might as well play an actual winger there in Perron. Buff's corsi as a forward is close to 44% whereas it's closer to 53% on D. Kane would just be a great fit in EDM's top 6

Agreed. It's a great deal for both teams

A few reasons why they'd be more willing to make a trade now than before. First, last year the cap came down so trade options were very limited with so many team right up to the cap. Second, the year before was the lockout and there was very little activity before that happened. Third, the Jets have been offloading dead weight with zero trade value the past couple of years. Most of those guys aren't even in the league anymore and the ones who are were traded for picks. Fourth, they've now onto their 2nd coach and have a better view what players are really going to fit with the team. Fifth, they've finally gone through their first 'regular' year and similar to the 4th point, now know what they have. First year was just trying to see what they had. 2nd was the lockout season without a training camp. 3rd was a regular year. A cap crunch which made transactions difficult but overall pretty regular at least in assessing your players and now their valuation of some guys is pretty different than it was previously. Sixth, their draft picks are finally starting to show what they have and the team has a better feel for what their timelines are and how impactful they will be. Still a ton of holes in the roster but those are a lot more definitively defined now than they were a year ago.

There are actually a lot of material differences between this off-season and previous ones. IMO it's actually pretty clear why they're now in a position to make moves that they weren't able to make in previous seasons. Still doesn't mean they will, but there are a lot of teams looking to make changes this year and not many have any cap issues. To me it makes a lot of sense why this would be the correct time to move a guy like Buff. His place on the team now looks to be as a 3rd line wing but his value to some other teams is much higher than that. That wasn't really the case until the Jets made the decision that he was going to stay up front for them. If he was still playing a top 4 D role and on the PP, his value to the Jets is much different. I'd personally like to see Kane play a full season with Scheif and Wheeler, but with enough of a return they could move him as well. There are a lot of teams with quite a bit of depth who are in the trade market this off-season (with little activity since the lockout a lot of other teams have been pretty stagnant in making significant moves as well) so this isn't an off-season when you don't want to be taking offers. This amount of interest for major activity might not come around again for a long time.

I would think the Jets should take a long look at Hiller if they want to upgrade their goaltending. Anaheim has chosen to stick with their youth in net (Andersson and Gibson) But Hiller is still a very good tender and I would think a great improvement over Pavelec.

Trade for his rights ahead of the draft (try a deal similar to the one the Islanders did for Boyle) and if they can sign him before the draft then they can look to trade away Pavelec at the draft. It would be a dump so they don't need a lot in return. It would be more about just moving him on. Look to teams that need to make the cap floor like Buffalo or the Islanders (may prove to work well with Halak). Really Calgary falls into that group as well but I'm not sure I would want him for there (personal bias).

Then from there bring up one of the AHL guys to back up Hiller.

I'm also curious as to how hard the Jets will be after Mike Richards should the Kings buy him out. With him being from Kenora it would be like coming home for him. Him, Schieffele, and Little down the middle would be very good.

you have a few great ideas! the only suggestion that I can't understand is trading pav. I don't think they would be able to move him. IMO he is a back up goaltender who can steal a game every now and again. I don' t see anyone paying 3.9 a year to this guy...

Unless Chevy can get a huge return for Kane, and I mean absolutely fleece some dummy GM, then I think trading him would be a huge mistake. Kane needs a little coaching about positioning and using his teammates better. If Maurice can do that, Kane will be an absolute beast.

My reason for saying to trade Pavelec is that I wouldn't think that the Jets would want to have close to 4 million tied up in a back up goalie. I agree that he can steal games, but that is a lot of cash for a back-up that could be spent to fill other holes (like the possible Mike Richards that I had suggested) or to go after a different UFA. Also if there is the desire to give the AHL goaltender a shot, then you need to have the spot available.

As for having others that will pay him, look to the rebuilding teams that have a lot of youth right now. Young players are still limited by entry level contracts but their teams still have to make the cap floor. Teams like Buffalo, the Islanders, and even Calgary will need to take on a higher contract in order to achieve this. In effect they are paying Pavelec the 3.9 million not because he is worth that, but because the ruled say they have to hit that floor.

You know this may be the best trade for big names I have seen proposed on Hockeybuzz.
